Artist Statement
Tethered Boundaries explores the intricate relationship between nature, the human body, and globalization through a mixed-media installation. The canvas features a textured depiction of raw meat, resembling an undulating organic landscape, evoking themes of bodily fragility, materiality, and humanity’s dependence on natural resources. Suspended from the painting are raw sausages, extending the bodily associations while referencing consumption, commodification, and cyclical processes.
Ropes descend from the canvas, connecting to a distorted “Earth” – a repurposed yoga ball painted with both a world map and snow-capped mountains. This fusion of cartography and natural imagery highlights the tension between human-defined territories and the untouched vastness of nature. The snow-capped peaks evoke grandeur and remoteness, while the map underscores human intervention and geopolitical boundaries, turning the Earth into a paradoxical object—both a natural entity and a subject of control.
In front of the Earth, scattered plaster fingers lay on the floor, resembling severed remnants of history—symbols of loss, intervention, or transformation. Further ahead, delicate ceramic clouds hover as the only ethereal element in this otherwise tethered and tension-filled composition. Fragile yet light, they suggest an ambiguous space between weight and weightlessness, reality and aspiration.
By incorporating elements of food, the human body, geography, and nature, this work visualizes the intricate and often paradoxical connections between individuals and the world. It invites viewers to reflect on their position within globalization, questioning the shifting boundaries between humans, nature, civilization, and the wild.
